THE RACE: Sunday, August , 2005                                                                                                      

The River Rockets "Duel of the Dunes" at South Padre Island Adventure Race, puts two member teams through a multisport challenge of 7-15 miles of urban mountain biking throughout South Padre Island and historical Isla Blanca Park, 2-3 miles of running in the sand dunes, and 2-5 miles kayaking in the bay. Teams will also face mystery events that will include a water activity at Schlitterbahn Water Park...be prepared to get WET! (this race may include swimming in chest high waters without a PFD). The two person teams travel together and compete in all events, emphasizing team work. Teams will finish the race in 2-4 hours.

LOCATION: South Padre Island Convention & Visitors' Bureau

RACE TIME: Race starts at 7:30am. Space is limited to  the first 100 teams, so register early!

CATEGORIES: Coed, Male, Female, Coed Masters (both racers must be at least 40 years of age), & Open Juniors (13-19)

ENTRY FEE:

$40 per team for "Open Juniors" (no late fee)

$60 per team early entry discount (before 8/12/05)

$70 per team late entry registration (after 8/12/05)

AWARDS: Awards to the top 10 in each category. Awards to the top 3 "Best Hawaiin" Costume!

PASTA DINNER / PACKET PICKUP: Needing to carb up the night before? Join us for a pasta dinner or come by and pick up your packet nhe night before at Louie's Backyard on Saturday, August 27, 2005 from 6:00pm - 9:00pm. CAN'T BEAT THE PRICE!

Updates:

1. Will water stops be provided? No, Adventure racing are self-sufficient races. They are geared to teach racers about preparation, responsbilities, accountablities, and about critical thinking.

2. Will kayaks & paddles be provided? Yes, all racers will use inflatable tandem kayaks that will be provided for the race. Racers are required to furnish PFD's (Personal Flotation Device) or they may face disqualification.

3. What are they mystery events? It wouldn't be a mystery if we told you! But, they will be FUN!

4. Do both team members have to travel together? Yes, both members must be withing 15 feet of each other or they may face penalties or disqualification.

5. Will the mountain biking section be on the sand? No, we realize that you  probably cherish our bike, therefore would not want the sand to tear away at your components. The bike will be your primary method of transportation from one end of the Island to the other.

6. What should I wear? You should wear something comfortable like biking shorts, tank tops, etc. It will be rather warm, and you will be given a race bib (looks like a race singlet) to wear over you shirt, jersy, or tank top. You can wear the bib over a sports bra, tank top, or for you guys...just wear it alone.

7. Where will I place my belongings? All of your team's belongings & equipment will be placed in the "TA" (Transition Area), that will be designated for racers only. No outside help from family or friends will be allowed.

8. What other gear or equipment do I need? A beach towel or very small tarp is good to bring to put all your stuff on in the Transition Area. Other suggested items are extra socks (in case the other ones get wet), small ice chest (with water, gatorade, etc.), sunblock, running shoes,  and energy bars & gels (can be found at your local bike shop or grocery store). One member of your team should carry a bike repair kit, including a spare tube, and know how to change a flat tire.
